Deaths From Drug-Resistant Infections Set to Spike by 2050

The GRAM report, published in The Lancet, reveals a concerning trend in deaths caused by antibiotic-resistant infections. It predicts that the number of deaths will increase from 1.14 million in 2021 to 1.91 million in 2050. The Pew Charitable Trusts estimated that the economic burden of antibiotic resistance could reach around $100 trillion by 2050 if not addressed. There is an urgent need for more targeted and specific antibiotics, especially those effective against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is rapidly increasing in the United States.
