4th person in US mysteriously stricken with deadly bacteria from South Asia
Melioidosis is an infectious disease isolated to equatorial regions and particularly in southeast Asia. It is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei and is becoming resistant to traditional therapies. The Burkholderia sp. remain listed as Category B potential pathogens of great concern as a potential bioweapon. The CDC just posted an alert concerning four cases of B. pseudomallei caused disease in four different states (MN, TX, KS and GA). None of the patients reported any travel outside the US.
