COVID-19- Reason for Coronavirus deaths revealed
The authors of a new study found when compared with the overall mortality rates in hospitalized COVID-19 patients, the mortality rates in this retrospective examination of 17,534 patient records were significantly higher (56%) among patients with secondary infections, against an overall mortality rate of 11.6% in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. The study was done in 9 tertiary hospitals between June and August 2020 by Dr. Sonam Vijay of the Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi, India. For patients with gram-negative bacterial secondary infections, the mortality rate was even higher, at 72%.
The gram-negative bacteria isolated were ~85% resistant to extended-spectrum beta-lactam antibiotics. Also, of the gram-negative bacteria isolated, 74% were also resistant to carbapenem antibiotics. Trana Discovery stands ready to discover a bio-selective antibiotic with a unique mechanism of action against such bacteria.
The actual study was published in the Journal of Infection and Drug Resistance (link here) on May 24, 2021.
