COVID’s rise is elevating another concern
We must keep in mind that while this pandemic caused by a respiratory virus (SARS-CoV-2) is top of mind, superbugs (multidrug resistant bacteria- MDR) still kill ~35,000 people in the US each year and 700,000 worldwide. When the role of these slower-growing bacteria are examined as partially responsible for COVID deaths, these death figures will surely increase.
However, we must also keep in mind that everyone’s ecosystem, our microbiome, always contains a mix of bacteria. In our superbug fight, we can’t jeopardize the health of these essential bacteria by the overuse of broad-spectrum antibiotics that disrupt this finely tuned balance of beneficial and detrimental bacteria. Trana stands ready to discover selective spectrum antibiotics that eliminate the destructive bacteria leaving essential bacteria undisturbed.
