Now, ‘Banana Covid’ hits plantations
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations is of the opinion that TR4 (tropical race 4 of the Fusarium oxysporum mold) is one of the “the most destructive of all plant diseases”. As with Covid-19, there is no treatment yet. Therefore this article points out that scientists recommend biosecurity measures be employed. These include “plant quarantine” to slow the spread. India is the latest country that has identified “hot spot” and while India consumes most bananas raised there, further spread of this disease might jeopardize the $26 billion global banana trade.
